Our History

The United Way of Henry County & Martinsville , Virginia ( United Way of HCM) was founded in 1937 with the mission to unite and mobilize the community in assessing and meeting critical human service needs. The United Way invests its resources in meeting the needs of residents through funding of programs and services working in three major areas:

  • Education
  • Income
  • Health

United Way also leads three highly successful community initiatives, including:

  • Early childhood initiative that focuses on preparing young people for success upon entering school.
  • HOPE Initiative (Helping People Progress Economically), which is focused on helping our families keep more money in their pocket and make smart financial decisions
  • The Nonprofit Leaders Network, a program that works to address the needs and bolster the infrastructure of the entire nonprofit sector in Martinsville and Henry County .

Located in the City of Martinsville , the United Way of HCM serves city and county residents with a population of approximately 70,000.

United Way of HCM is led by its Board of Directors and an Executive Director who brings extensive business and nonprofit management experience to the community.

United Way of HCM has been successful in diversifying its mission and revenue streams to better meet the needs of the community, including obtaining grants to assist with basic needs, financial stability and early childcare needs.
