The VITA FREE TAX PROGRAM will return Tuesday, January 20, 2026. 

Households with a total income of $67,000 or less qualify for this service.

Tax preparation services will be offered by appointment only, which may be scheduled by phone beginning Tuesday, January 20, 2026. VITA hours of operation will be Tuesday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. 

To assist with the tax interview process, please arrive 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled appointment to complete the required forms. These forms will also be available in a green box outside the VITA office door for those who would like to complete them prior to their appointment day and time.

Please remember to bring the following items to your appointment:

1. All tax related documents

2. A photo ID of the taxpayer and the spouse, if married

3. Social Security Card for every person claimed on this tax return (a photo is permitted)

4. W-2 for each job worked for all tax filers

5. Form 1099 and all other sources of income, including SSA-1099 for Social Security recipients

6. 1095-A form (Marketplace Health Insurance)

7. Form 1098, if applicable (e.g., 1098-T issued for tuition paid, or 1098-E student loan interest)

8. Identity Protection PIN or IP PIN, if required. If you require this PIN to file, but did not receive your letter, please let the receptionist know when scheduling your appointment so that our site coordinator may assist you in retrieving this number. 

9. A check or bank statement with your account and routing number for direct deposit. If you need a bank account, please contact United Way of Henry County and Martinsville's BankOn representative at 276-403-3516, and press option 5. 

All documents must be printed. We are unable to use anything in electronic form.

Joint filers must both be present before taxes can be filed.
